Residents interested in serving their community are invited to attend a Village Council Candidate Workshop on Saturday, July 11, at 9:00 a.m. at the Elberta Labor Heritage Center, 704 Frankfort Avenue, Elberta.
The free workshop will be led by former Elberta Village Clerk Cathy Anderson, who will provide an overview of what it takes to run for a village council seat and what newly elected officials can expect if they are elected this November.
Designed for prospective candidates and anyone curious about local government, the workshop will cover:
- Candidate eligibility and filing requirements
- What to expect after being elected
- An overview of the General Law Village Act as it applies to villages such as Benzonia, Elberta, Lake Ann, and Thompsonville
- Basic council meeting procedures
- Time commitments and responsibilities of serving on a village council
- Resources available to help elected officials succeed
- An opportunity to ask questions
The workshop is intended to make the process of running for local office more accessible and less intimidating for first-time candidates.
