Hear Pearce and David Decker’s interview with Heather Hettinger, Fisheries Management Biologist for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, in the Central Lake Michigan Management Unit. In this position she is charged with managing the State’s aquatic resources in parts of nine different counties. This area encompasses six major river systems and approximately 1,900 lakes that range in size from 1 to 18,770 acres, and includes the second and fourth largest (by surface area) lakes in the state, in addition to East Grand Traverse Bay, West Grand Traverse Bay, Little Traverse Bay, and the Beaver Island Archipelago region in Lake Michigan.
Born and raised in Northern Michigan, Aubrey Parker has lived in Benzie County since 1994 (except for nine months of the year away for college from 2004-2010). Although trained in the “hard” sciences, Aubrey made a sudden switch to journalism at the end of her six-year undergraduate career. Aubrey worked for six years at a Traverse City-based news organization covering the global water crisis, and she has had the opportunity to report from Chilean Patagonia, Palestine, India, and the 2009 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen. Aubrey is now the co-owner, editor and photographer for the Betsie Current. She is also a School Board member for Frankfort-Elberta Area Schools.
