As part of our Civic Access & Media Democracy Project, WUWU will also be hosting two Community Conversations with local journalists. This will be an opportunity for community members to get a better understanding of the local media ecosystem and what it’s like to be a journalist in a small town. Some questions we will try to tackle include: What is news? How do you judge if a story is newsworthy? How does a reporter conduct comprehensive research to make sure a story is on solid footing?  What is the role of a reporter in society?  How is AI impacting journalism today?

Colin Merry works as a reporter for the Benzie County Record Patriot. He grew up in Frankfort enjoying the lakes and streams of the Benzie County area. He started school at Northwestern Michigan College and finished at Central Michigan University. He enjoys walking, fishing and reading.

Austin Rowlader is a freelance reporter and producer for IPR based in Bellaire. His written stories have appeared in Bridge Michigan and many up north newspapers. Austin also coordinates Red Pine Radio and hosts The Antrim Writers Series.
